How to Visit Old Heritage City, Ahmedabad, India

If you are someone who is in love with traveling and heritage, Ahmedabad should be your next destination. If you plan to visit India but have doubts about how to visit India, this post will be particularly helpful to you. This post contains my Ahmedabad highlights and has some interesting tips and tricks if you plan to discover Ahmedabad. A little background to the city is that it is called the World Heritage City and it is a destination full of history and culture. A lot of people feel skeptical while visiting India, but India is very tourist-friendly and welcoming towards tourists.

India is famous for its spicy and rich cuisine as well as colorful culture. Ahmedabad is the crux of all these qualities. When you will visit India, you will find yourself dazzled by its colorful interior, rich history, and heritage.

India has centuries worth of history embedded in imperial Mughal cities like Delhi and Agra where the Mughal palaces and artifacts are still alive. Cities like Kathmandu are known for local adventures.

Rajasthan is famous for an entirely different league of culture and the pink city of Jaipur which holds palaces and statues owing to the royal heritage that it has.

This blog post is, however, dedicated to Ahmedabad which is my hometown and the place where I grew up. Ahmedabad is not famous for its tourism but is famous for its heritage, it is older than the 600-years-old walled city in the state of Gujarat and is named as UNESCO’s World Heritage Center.

If you are visiting India for a longer span, you must not miss the opportunity to explore Ahmedabad. In its surroundings is the white desert, a few miles from the city itself. To explore the White Desert, I recommend visiting the city of Kutch. I had an amazing stay there. Kutch has a range of accommodation options but the best of them are the local “Kutchi styled huts”. If you are interested in a similar arrangement, you can opt for a resort-like “City-The Village Resort”. It is a great place to walk around and explore the salted ground. And the area is populated with lots of food vendors, street hawkers, clothing sellers and you can even take camel rides around the desert when you’re there.

Since the city is in the heart of a desert, the ideal time to visit would be between mid-November and mid-February. Otherwise, the temperature is too high and the heat makes it difficult for you to explore the city comfortably. During May/June the temperatures rise to almost 50 degrees Celsius, making it too hot for a prolonged stay or exploration.

The Great Rann of Kutch is known as the White Desert because of the salt deposits in the region. Post-monsoon from July up till September, the area becomes wet. Once the monsoon rainwater dries up, the area becomes a brilliant white because of the fresh salt deposits.

From November 2019 to February 2020, the government of Gujarat arranges the famous “Rann Festival”. In it, tents are set up in the nearby village of Dhordo, where other vast tent cities are also set up. The set-up contains air-conditioned tents and Bhunga. A lot of cultural and local events also take place during the festival.
